UKVI eVisa: What You Need to Know

The UK is moving to a digital immigration system, replacing physical documents like BRPs and BRCs with an eVisa, a secure online record of your immigration status.

What Is an eVisa?

An eVisa is your digital immigration record, showing your permission to enter or stay in the UK. Access it by creating a free UKVI account.

What Documents Are Being Replaced?

eVisas replace:

  • Biometric residence permits (BRPs)
  • Biometric residence cards (BRCs)
  • Passport endorsements (e.g. indefinite leave stamps)
  • Vignette stickers in passports

Benefits of eVisas

  • Secure: can’t be lost, stolen, or tampered with
  • Fast access: no need to wait for physical cards
  • Easier to prove status to employers, landlords, or border officials using a share code

How to Access Your eVisa

  1. Create a UKVI account
  2. Confirm your identity
  3. Link your account to your eVisa

You can update personal info, view your status, and generate share codes to prove your rights.

Travel with Your eVisa

  • Travel with the passport linked to your UKVI account
  • Generate a share code before travel (valid 90 days)
  • Ensure all personal details are up to date to avoid delays

If waiting for an update, bring your old passport or BRP to avoid issues at the border.

Who Needs an eVisa?

You’ll need one if you:

  • Have permission to stay in the UK for more than 6 months
  • Hold indefinite leave to remain

You don’t need one if you’re a British or Irish passport holder or have the right of abode.

Special Cases

  • Expired BRP: Can be used for up to 18 months after expiry to create a UKVI account.
  • BRC Holders: Must have settled status or another form of leave to remain. BRCs expire for travel after 2 June 2025.
  • Other Physical Documents: Apply for a free ‘No Time Limit’ (NTL) application to receive an eVisa.
  • Windrush: Check if eligible under the Windrush Scheme if settled in the UK before 1988.

Overseas Applications

When applying from abroad:

  • Use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app, or
  • Attend a visa application centre

From 15 July 2025, study and work visas may no longer come with a vignette, eVisa access will be required before travel.

For Children

Children must have their own UKVI account. Parents/guardians can manage it on their behalf.
